At the age of 62, Maine Running Hall of Famer Bernd Heinrich is still winning races. Not just age-group victories, but outright victories over runners much younger.
A year after he set an American age-group record for 50 miles, Heinrich returned to Brunswick for the Maine Track Club 50-Miler & 50K. Although he originally planned to run the 50-miler again, he changed plans in midrace and stopped at 50K. The result was another victory, this time more than an hour ahead of the next closest competitor in a field of 11 runners who completed the 50K. The University of Vermont zoology professor completed the distance in 4 hours, 4 minutes, 50 seconds. Vicki Blais won the women's division 5:29:35.
With Heinrich out of the picture in the 50-miler, MTC ultra stalwart Craig Wilson, 53, claimed the victory in 6:55:41. Wilson pulled away from women's winner and second-place finisher Laurel Valley (7:04:53) over the final 15 miles.
